How PSG used personal ties with Barcelona to seal Dro’s transfer – report

Paris Saint-Germain have finalised the signing of Pedro ‘Dro’ Fernandez from Barcelona, and fresh details from MARCA reveal that the deal happened by complete diplomacy rather than by aggressive negotiation.

It is said that rather than a sudden raid, the transfer was constructed with utmost respect.

One of the most important elements in the operation was the strong institutional relationship between Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain.

PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi was determined not to enter into any form of conflict with Joan Laporta.

For that reason, PSG did not move until the situation was completely clear. Only once Dro personally informed Barcelona of his intention to leave did PSG activate their approach.

How did the move happen?

Until that moment, there was no pressure from Paris. Barcelona were already dealing with the disappointment of losing a highly rated midfielder, and PSG were careful not to worsen the situation.

Once the player’s position became official, the focus shifted from retaining him to finding the most suitable destination.

At that point, PSG were perfectly positioned to negotiate calmly and directly with Barça.

Manchester City and Borussia Dortmund both showed strong interest in Dro. However, it was PSG who managed to align every piece of the puzzle.

The combination of a clear sporting plan, respectful dialogue with Barcelona, and the player’s preferences ultimately tipped the balance in Paris’ favour.

From PSG’s perspective, the deal has certainly been more than the reported €8.5 million fee.

This is because PSG manager Luis Enrique and sporting advisor Luis Campos see Dro as a natural fit for the club’s new identity.

What tipped the scales in PSG’s favour was the player’s preference, the club’s strong sporting project and their ideal relationship with Barcelona
