Let’s face it, Christmas wouldn’t be Christmas without at least one viewing of Home Alone. 35 years after its initial release (yes, you are that old), the festive comedy about an eight-year-old (Macaulay Culkin) who is accidentally left behind when his family jets off for the holidays has become as much a part of the festive season as tinsel, trees and turkey. Except, some fans have been left reeling after a string of mistakes in the film were revealed – with some declaring ‘Christmas is ruined’ as a result. (Picture: Century Fox/Kobal/Shutterstock)
Well, all of this has come to light courtesy of a TikTokker called 1minutecritic, who has previously pointed out errors in the likes of The Lord Of The Rings, Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire and – say it ain’t so – Die Hard. The clip, which has been watched nearly 700,000 times, points out three mistakes which viewers may well have overlooked before – but which they’ll never be able to unsee now. The first one happens in the scene where the McCallister family is rushing to leave for the airport, and the boy from across the street begins bothering one of the van drivers, only to be told to ‘hit the road’. As he points out, you can see the young actor mouthing the words of the driver along with him. ‘Why did they leave this in the movie?’ he asks, ‘It’s so obvious it’s a huge mistake!’ But he doesn’t stop there. Next up, the Tiktokker refers to the iconic scene in which Kevin rides his sled down the staircase out onto the front lawn. ‘This always bothered me as a kid,’ he says, ‘because you can see the stairs don’t perfectly align with the front door,’ before going on to suggest that wheels are clearly visible on the underside of the sled as it leaves the house. And all that before he moves on to ‘the case of the magically changing pants’… (Picture: 20th Century Fox)
This moment occurs in the scene when Kevin runs home from the church after talking to his elderly next-door neighbour. Yet his trousers seem to magically change from a pair of dark pants when he begins his run home to a pair of blue jeans as he’s reaching the house. And then, seconds later, as he’s preparing a trap for the Wet Bandits, his trousers have changed back to the original pair. (Picture: 20th Century Fox)
Others pointed out discrepancies they’ve come across in the film. User Pjbrinks asked: ‘If trees fell and knocked out the phone lines, how did Kevin order a pizza?’ And there were also those who weren’t too happy with the errors being pointed out. Andy said: ‘Christmas ruined’, while Mika412 added: ‘Please don’t ruin my childhood.’ (Picture: Moviestore/Shutterstock)
It isn’t the only time the movie has come under scrutiny recently, as the theory that Kevin wasn’t the only child left behind has recently reared its head. It was spotted that when cousin Heather does the headcount before heading to the airport and declares there to be 11 children including herself (having counted the neighbour in Kevin’s place), she also counts herself twice — leading to speculation another small child is perhaps keeping Kevin company at the house. Of course, a movie as famous and popular as Home Alone is always going to invite debate, especially among its fans – and it’s by no means the only film to boast a few inaccuracies here and there. Or the only Christmas film, for that matter. It’s showing on Channel 4 on Christmas Eve at 5.30pm, with the sequel, Home Alone 2: Lost In New York on Christmas Day at 5.25pm. Or, if you can’t wait that long to watch it, you can see it right now on Disney+. (Picture: Moviestore/Shutterstock)Add as preferred source
