The soap event to end all soap events, Corriedale, is looming, as the casts of both Coronation Street and Emmerdale unite to usher in ITV’s new soap ‘power hour’ transmission pattern.

Over the past few months, both soaps have been teasing which characters are set to be involved in the historic episode, releasing a few names at a time.

Well, the drip feeding is officially over, as the bosses at Corrie and Emmerdale have confirmed exactly who’ll be appearing in the soap extravaganza, and who’ll potentially be meeting their maker as mass carnage has been confirmed – characters will die.

Viewers will notice that John Sugden (Oliver Farnworth) is confirmed to be involved, following his dramatic comeback to Emmerdale over the festive season.

This confirms a major fan theory that began floating around online after eagle-eyed viewers spotted a wanted poster of John in Weatherfield nick. We’re surprised no one looked at the poster and thought it bore a striking resemblance Andy Carver…

‘Having been in both shows now, I was super excited. It’s just iconic, isn’t it? I knew that with Duncan Foster directing it, it was going to be good,’ the man himself told Metro when we caught up with him at the Corriedale premiere.

What happens in Corriedale?

It’s a bad night to be driving down a dark country lane somewhere between Hotten and Weatherfield – but that’s exactly what many of our favourite characters are doing.

Reeling from the events of Debbie’s dramatic wedding, Carl gets behind the wheel of a car, his heart pumping more alcohol than blood round his system. With Debbie in the passenger seat and drunken Carl careering dangerously out of control, they both find themselves caught up in the chaos.

At the same time, Becky attempts to flee with Lisa and Betsy in tow, having finally convinced her wife to forget about life on the cobbles and move to Spain where they can be safe and, more importantly, together.

But when Lisa gets a game-changing phone call that distracts Becky, she loses control of the vehicle with devastating consequences.

With Kit and Carla in hot pursuit, they must race against time to save the lives of those trapped at the crash site. However, things get more complicated when Kit finds himself in pursuit of John.

Aaron and John give a whole new meaning to the phrase ‘riding shotgun’ as they battle for control in the confines of the car.

With a tight grip on the weapon, Aaron demands that John drive to the police station to hand himself in. But when John slams on the accelerator, forcing Aaron to grab the steering wheel, John takes his opportunity to fight for the gun, sending the car veering dangerously off-course.

Knowing that lover Aaron is in grave danger, Robert jumps in Joe’s car and they speed off after them, with no idea of what awaits them…

The atmosphere is completely different in Cain’s car, as he and Moira drive Sarah and Jacob to Manchester airport for their honeymoon.

However, close behind is Mack with Charity in the passenger seat, flashing his lights and blinding Cain. As Cain slams his foot on the brake, he can do nothing but watch as Mack’s car smashes through a fence and into a field.

And if you thought the chaos would end there, you’re very much mistaken.

In the queue of traffic forming behind the crash site, the driver of a van glances into the back at a bound and terrified woman…

The episode ends in Hotten General, where the injured are treated and families grieve the loss of loved ones, with the lives of all involved having been changed irrevocably.

It’s set to be explosive… (Picture: ITV)

Iain MacLeod, ITV’s Executive Producer for Continuing Drama, previously teased the mega episode, saying: ‘It’s beyond exciting that filming is under way on Corriedale. There is a massive buzz around both the Leeds and Manchester sites and the images coming out of the shoot are utterly spectacular.

‘And that’s before we’ve even got to all the brilliant transpennine interactions between characters from the different shows!

He added: ‘As a soap fan myself, I think my head is going to explode when the episode airs next year. It will be mind-blowing, historical and unmissable.’
