FCTA ratifies rehabilitation of Presidential Villa roads, 30 years after construction

ABUJA: The Federal Capital Territory FCT Executive Council has ratified the rehabilitation and resurfacing of internal roads within the Presidential Villa, Abuja, more than 30 years after they were originally constructed.

The ratification was part of decisions taken at the first Executive Council meeting of 2026, chaired by the Minister of the FCT, Nyesom Wike, following the completion of the emergency project handled by Julius Berger Plc.

Briefing journalists after the meeting, the Executive Secretary of the Federal Capital Development Authority FCDA, Yunana Dauda said the roads had been in continuous use for over three decades and had developed extensive surface cracks, making resurfacing inevitable to extend their lifespan and ensure safety within the seat of power.

He explained that the rehabilitation was executed on an emergency basis, completed, and subsequently presented to the council for ratification in line with procurement requirements.

He added that alongside the Presidential Villa roads, the council also ratified the emergency construction of the Kabusa–Ketti Road, which had previously become a security risk due to its poor condition and associated criminal activities.

According to him, the road project, awarded towards the end of 2024, was completed and commissioned in June 2025 and is currently in use, with the final contract sum put at ₦9.8 billion.

Council also ratified the award of an emergency contract for erosion control and restoration of major water transmission pipelines from the Lower Usuma Dam that supply potable water to the city.

He said the intervention became necessary after erosion exposed the pipelines and chambers, threatening a collapse of water supply, adding that the project was executed by SCC Nigeria Limited at a cost of about ₦1.7 billion.

Meanwhile, the council also approved other memoranda aimed at strengthening service delivery and revenue generation in the territory.

The Mandate Secretary for Education, Dr Danlami Hayyo said council approved a ₦62 million contract for facility management services at the Korea Model School, a high-tech institution established in 2018 through collaboration between the Korean Government and the Universal Basic Education Commission and handed over to the FCT Administration in 2019.

On revenue mobilization, the Director of Lands Administration, Chijioke Nwankwoeze said the council approved enforcement actions against defaulters in the payment of ground rents, certificates of occupancy and land use conversion charges, warning that measures such as revocation of titles and sealing of properties would commence next week.
