Nobody had this on their Emmerdale bingo card – a Christmas wedding for none other than Eric Pollard (Chris Chittell). And the lucky lady is…Kerry Wyatt (Laura Norton).
‘It’s like a duo that you shouldn’t put together,’ Laura Norton admitted, ‘but for some reason it just works.’
While it seems like an entirely random idea, the seed of it was planted a few episodes ago when Kerry discovered that Eric had opened a bank account in her name and put £15,000 in it. She immediately went off on a spending spree only to find out that the money was intended as a nest egg for Jacob (Joe-Warren Plant).
Eric explained that he wanted to make sure Jacob was financially secure in his future – a future that may include having to look after his baby on his own because of Sarah (Katie Hill)’s life-limiting illness. By siphoning off cash into different accounts, Pollard was trying to ensure his money didn’t all end up being used up if he needed to go into a care home himself later on.
And at that point Kerry declared that there might be a more efficient way of doing things – and said she had an idea. This wedding is the idea.
‘He’s opened an account in her name and a lot of people would lose it and never speak to that person again or feel really betrayed,’ Laura explained.
‘She’s just like, “God, you should have just said, because I’m going to go one step further now and say we should do this.” And that’s where you just kind of go, my God, she’s incredible. There’s nobody else like her and you are constantly opening a bunch of scripts and going, what is she doing now?’
Unfortunately their wedding takes place just before Jacob and Sarah are due to have their own surprise ceremony at the same place, and when they see Jacob’s granddad has got there before them they’re not best pleased.
‘This wedding was a massive shock to Sarah and Jacob plus it means they missed out on their wedding. Jacob has been planning this special day to marry the girl of his dreams. He’s fuming because he doesn’t even know why they’ve done it, they’ve just completely ruined his day,’ Laura said.
Part of Jacob and Sarah’s shock could be down to Kerry’s wedding outfit, which is a not exactly subtle cowgirl outfit in bright pink. Beyoncé fan Laura loved the look.
‘I went to the Cowboy Carter concert, I dressed up a bit. But when I got the costume for Kerry on that day, to film the wedding scenes, I was like, this is how I should have dressed for that concert. All the luminous pink and just going for it.
‘Kerry in true Kerry style has gone, even though this marriage isn’t real, I’m going for it. I am getting married, so I’m gonna get dressed up, so she’s gone to town.’

As fun as the wedding scenes are, Laura insisted that Kerry is acting out of a genuine affection and care for Eric and Jacob.

‘Kerry, however dysfunctional and chaotic she is, is a girl with a heart who makes true friendships. She is loyal and does genuinely care and about and love people and when she came into the village, Eric and Val (Charlie Hardwick) had adopted Amy (Natalie Ann Jamieson).
‘And they did a really fantastic job and she was well cared for and Amy was very happy. They thought Kerry was such a mess and a car crash but they were kind and they took her in as well because they loved Amy. But now Amy’s gone.
‘I feel like this is some sort of misplaced guilt a little bit. I think she genuinely does care about Eric. They’re both loveable rogues, they’ve both got a really similar default, but I feel like it’s a full circle moment where it is like – you looked after my daughter and I know that my daughter would want me to do this for you.’
