David Tennant seems all too ready to step back onto the Tardis according to a cheeky new social media post from his wife, Georgia.

The Doctor Who star who played the Tenth Doctor from 2007 to 2010 and returned as 14 for the 60th anniversary specials in 2023 has an enduring relationship with the long-running BBC series.

Since Ncuti Gatwa exited the show after two seasons earlier this year and regenerated in Billie Piper (who previously played companion Rose Tyler), the future of the Russell T Davies-helmed show has been thrown into the air.

The sci-fi show will return for a Christmas special in 2026, but what that looks like and who will star in it remains to be seen, leaving Whovians abuzz with various theories.

After Tennant appeared in an official video on Doctor Who social media in December, fans launched into renewed speculation that it was a sign he could be returning yet again.

Especially since his Doctor (who is currently alive and kicking about in Donna Noble’s back garden) is inextricably linked with Rose/Bad Wolf.

Now, it seems as though the Broadchurch actor is on the chatter, with Georgia fuelling rumours with Who-related post.

Taking to her Instagram story, she shared a screenshot of a silly message exchange between her and her husband.

In it, Georgia has sent a photo of the suitbag holding his quintessential brown suit, to which he replies: ‘Time to get it back on…? X’.

His wife then quips: ‘Already taken it to Oxfam. Only way to stop you x’

Still, considering all the very plausible ways he could return to the Whoniverse, it’s certainly not out of the realm of possibility that he could be back.

The social media post is almost certainly in jest, but in a show with so many twists, turns and surprise returns, who knows if he really will be whipping out the Oxfam-destined suit sooner rather than later.

Still, after Ncuti took over for his tenure as the 15th Doctor, both Tennant and Davies were clear that the actor wouldn’t be returning as a Time Lord for a while.

In May 2024, the showrunner told The Times: ‘David is parked and retired, and it’s all Ncuti’s show now. Genuinely. [It’s] not that David might be coming back – he’s absolutely not coming back.’

He even joked: ‘I think [the 14th Doctor] died. I’m going to start saying that. He went to Venice, 2063, when the city sank, and he went into a whirlpool, which is really sad.’

Although the situation for the show, which has since departed from its deal with Disney Plus, has considerably changed since this declaration.

There’s still no word on who will be picking up the Time Lord mantle next, although we are starting to hear from actors who have been touted as good picks.

Adolescence star Erin Doherty recently addressed rumours she could be the next to play the iconic British role.

‘I’ve heard the Doctor Who rumour and I’m into sci-fi and fantasy but I can honestly say there have been no discussions!’ the Emmy winner told Radio Times.

Doctor Who is available to stream on BBC iPlayer.
