Tom Goodwin is set to join the coaching staff at his alma mater. The Fresno State baseball Hall of Famer, who won a World Series coaching with the Red Sox in 2018, tells Action News that he's joining Ryan Overland's staff as the Director of Player Development.
The Fresno native went to Central High School and played three years for his hometown team, suiting up for the Diamond Dogs from 1987-89. Goodwin helped lead Fresno State to the 1988 College World Series, where the 'Dogs tied for seventh, finishing the season with a school-record 56 wins.
The following season, he was named a First-Team All-American thanks to a program record 29-game hit streak. He also led the country with 61 stolen bases, helping Fresno State to 44 wins.
His #1 jersey is one of 11 retired jerseys in Fresno State baseball history.
His 14-year MLB career started when the Dodgers drafted him 22nd overall in the first round of the 1989 MLB Draft.
After his retirement in 2004, Goodwin joined the Mets staff, where he coached from 2012-17. He then spent four years with the Boston Red Sox and two seasons with the Atlanta Braves before beginning this new role with the Diamond Dogs.
Fresno State is coming off back-to-back Mountain West titles and will start its final season in the Mountain West on Friday, February 13, when Utah comes to town.
First pitch from Pete Beiden Field at Bob Bennett Stadium is set for 6:05 p.m.
