The BBC’s hit crime comedy, Black Ops, has returned with a second season of rib-tickling chaos.
The first season landed in 2023, starring Gbemisola Ikumelo and Hammed Animashaun as bumbling community support officers Dom and Kay.
After being recruited by the Met Police ‘in the hope of cleaning up their community’ soon they are ‘unwittingly thrust into the murky world of deep cover infiltration as they become part of a powerful criminal enterprise.’
Under the wing of gang leader Tevin (Akemnji Ndifornyen), the question remains: Just how much of a mess of everything will Dom and Kay make?
Season one not only secured plenty of praise but also drew in 2.3million viewers for its premiere and averaged 1.6m throughout the season.
Now, it’s back with a six new episodes of shenanigans as the ‘fake it til you make it’ pair face a whole new set of challenges that they may, or may not, overcome.
Compared to shows like The Outlaws, Detectorists and IT Crowd, this satirical sitcom has stood out from the crowd.
The Guardian’s five-star review of season one described the series as ‘pitch-perfect and star-packed’.
It continued: ‘While the cop corruption storyline makes this a very bingeable series – the setup is brilliantly intriguing – Black Ops always feels impressively like out-and-out comedy.’
As the Telegraph put it ‘who knew incompetent coppers and tough gangs could be this hilarious?’.
Although the Independent did warn of a ‘lack of bite’ it was won over by the ‘plenty of charm and charisma’ while Radio Times added ‘if you’re able to suspend your disbelief and lean into the chaos, Black Ops does more than enough to keep you entertained.’
The largely positive reception of the show from critics was also heartily echoed by fans.
‘This show is excellent. The chemistry with the two main characters is spot on. Its smart and funny and drama all at the same time.. that’s hard to pull off,’ keepitgoingtolife wrote on IMDb.
‘The two main characters are a blast. And the series’ plot was twisting and gripping enough to also provided enough suspense to make me keep watching to the end,’ claremont-93938 echoed.

Gbemisola, who also serves as one of the creators, teased about the new season that it was like ‘rediscovering your favourite shoes.’
She added: ‘A little bit older and stiffer but even more fabulous! I can’t believe some of the amazing things we’ve been able to achieve with this show the second time round.’
With the stakes higher than ever, viewers will have to tune into see whether Dom and Kay can handle the pressure.
Stars joining our returning crew include Tom Stourton, Nigel Havers, Annette Badland, Ed Speleers, and Cathy Tyson.
Black Ops season one and two are available to stream on BBC iPlayer now.
