A public proposal at a concert seems to have gone horribly wrong after the woman ran off stage.

Over the weekend the Australian duo Bootleg Rascal – which consists of Carlos Lara and Jimmy Young – kicked off their Reasons tour in Brisbane.

However, the celebrations took a turn when plans for a romantic moment went awry.

In a video shared by the band on social media – which they captioned ‘PDA gone wrong’ – a man can be seen standing on stage with a microphone as he addresses the crowd.

‘My partner and I came to watch Bootleg Rascal about two, three years ago,’ he began.

The man then called out: ‘Jamie, where are you? Can you come up on stage quickly?’

As the crowd cheered and clapped, a woman appeared from the crowd and also stepped up on stage.

Speaking to the woman, the man then told her: ‘We saw Bootleg Rascal about two years ago. I thought, you know, they’re our favourite band, and I thought today why not, maybe today is the time.’

He then got down on one knee.

However, he didn’t quite get the reaction he was hoping for, with the woman seen shaking her head and grabbing his hands before trying to pull him back up to stand.

As the crowd roared, the man could be heard repeating ‘no?’, before she ran off the stage.

Then faced with the ultimate rejection in front of others, he stayed kneeling until a person dressed in a Scooby-Doo costume (yes, really), ran up and helped the man to get to his feet.

The clip then cut off, with the video then reading: ‘Anyway here’s our break-up song. Stream Reasons x’ – a reference to their latest single.

Captioning the post, they also wrote: ‘First show off to a great start. Not sure we’ll be helping out with another public proposal for a while…’

They then said that ‘in any case, the tour continues this week’, listing another 14 scheduled shows across Australia.

After watching the failed proposal, many people weighed in on what they’d just witnessed.

‘I don’t think I have ever felt that awkward on stage in my life!!!’ band member Carlos commented.

‘Thats so rough,’ Benjamin shared, while Amelia said it ‘hurts to watch.’

‘Poor fella – anyone know if he’s ok?’ Rob asked, as Maria added: ‘Are we allowed to laugh. I feel bad.’

Others questioned whether it was staged to promote the tour and their new break-up single – or at least hoped for the man’s sake it was.

‘Please tell us that this is staged,’ user Vinyl45 wrote.

‘Amazing way to advertise the tour,’ Noah said.

Although the proposal at the Bootleg Rascal concert didn’t have a happy ending, several couples at Lewis Capaldi’s recent Australian tour walked away with accepted proposals.

Last month, the Scottish singer performed a string of shows Down Under, during which there were at least four proposals.

But after witnessing the first play out, Lewis didn’t miss his chance to poke fun at people who took the attention away from him briefly.

At his opening show at the Brisbane Entertainment Centre, a couple got engaged during his song Love the Hell Out of You – with Lewis then jokingly telling them off for ‘taking the shine off me’ and declaring: ‘It’s my concert!’

After offering his congratulations to the happy couple though, Lewis then quipped: ‘I’ll wait with bated breath for my invite to the wedding.’

However, during a subsequent show, the singer jokingly mocked another loved-up pair.

During a show at Sydney’s Qudos Bank Arena, the crowd started cheering, with the cameras that had been focused on Lewis then turning and capturing the proposal as it unfolded – which was then shown on the big screens.

After the woman said yes to her partner and they shared a kiss, Lewis’ signature sass came out.

‘That’s enough, put the cameras back on me,’ he joked as the audience broke out into laughter. ‘How dare you come here and propose! This is my show.’

He went on to congratulate pair but also told them to ‘let me know when you’re going to do that because I thought someone had fainted’.

Lewis also went on to share his sympathies for single fans who had just witnessed the romantic display.

‘There’s a lot of single, sad people at my shows as well, so you just f**king showed them what true love is and now almost 20,000 people hate you,’ he declared.
