Three foreign hikers were safely assisted off Table Mountain on Tuesday evening after being caught out by darkness during a late-afternoon hike.
The group – two women from Norway and one from Denmark – began their ascent from Kloof Corner at approximately 17:30, tackling the popular but demanding India Venster route.

Turned back
The hikers successfully reached Fountain Ledge but made the sensible decision to turn back at the scramble section, a steeper and more technical part of the trail.
However, as they descended, fading light made navigation increasingly difficult.
Realising visibility had become compromised, the trio contacted emergency services on 021 937 0300.
A small rescue team was promptly dispatched and located the hikers on the mountain’s slopes.
Responders guided the group safely to the lower cable station of the Table Mountain Aerial Cableway.
The operation concluded at 23:35, with all three women unharmed.
Rescue authorities used the incident to remind outdoor enthusiasts to prepare adequately, particularly as South Africa enters shorter daylight hours.
“While the views atop Table Mountain are undeniably world-class, the sunset is a clock that waits for no one,” WSAR noted.
Plan routes carefully
Hikers are urged to start early, plan their routes carefully, and carry essential gear – including a torch or headlamp – to account for unexpected delays.
The successful rescue once again highlighted the preparedness and dedication of mountain rescue teams operating in Cape Town’s iconic but challenging terrain.
“A huge thank you to our teams for their calm and quick response, proving once again that even when darkness thinks it’s winning, our rescuers are always one step ahead,” WSAR said.
