ABUJA—Ahead of Saturday’s Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Area Council elections, the National Chairman of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Professor Abubakar Gombe, has called on residents of Bwari Area Council to take ownership of the democratic process by electing credible and competent leaders.
Speaking during a courtesy visit to the palace of Sarkin Bwari, His Royal Highness Alhaji Awal Musa Ijakoro II, Gombe stressed that local government remains the tier of government closest to the people, responsible for addressing grassroots concerns.
“Area council leadership is pivotal to service delivery, community development, and social stability. Voters must assess candidates based on competence, accessibility, and integrity,” he said, urging residents to participate actively in the election.
The SDP National Chairman also highlighted the party’s people-centered policies, emphasizing economic empowerment, security, and improved service delivery at the grassroots. He expressed confidence in the party’s Bwari chairmanship candidate, Alhaji Abubakar Abdullahi, describing him as capable of delivering effective leadership.
Also speaking, Prince Adewole Adebayo, SDP’s 2023 presidential candidate, stressed the importance of local governance in delivering democratic dividends, urging residents to exercise their civic rights peacefully and responsibly. He described Abdullahi as a grassroots leader with strong community ties and emphasized the need for collaboration between elected officials and traditional institutions.
Abdullahi, accompanied by his running mate, Pope Ngoposha, pledged to promote inclusive governance and grassroots-driven development if elected. He promised policies that would enhance service delivery, improve infrastructure, strengthen transparency, and promote social cohesion across Bwari.
In response, Sarkin Bwari called on political stakeholders and residents to ensure peaceful participation in the elections, stressing unity, mutual respect, and the importance of lawful voting. He reminded all parties that leadership is ultimately determined by the will of the people and prayed for a hitch-free electoral process.
The SDP delegation sought the monarch’s blessing for peaceful and credible elections, reaffirming the party’s commitment to responsible, inclusive, and community-focused governance in Bwari Area Council.
