It takes a lot for Coronation Street viewers to collectively agree on something. But when it comes to Mal, the verdict is already in, and it’s not good.
Ever since the mysterious newcomer drifted into Weatherfield, fans have been sounding the alarm. Not because he’s done anything outright evil (yet), but because everything about him feels… off.
As one viewer bluntly put it: ‘You can’t tell me Mal’s not a creep!’
And they’re far from alone.
Mal first met Bernie Winter in a hotel bar, and what followed was a chaotic night that saw her end up in his room. Nothing romantic happened, but the pair did take drugs together, something Bernie has hidden from her husband, Dev Alahan.
It should have been a one-off mistake. An awkward blip. The kind of soap subplot that fizzles out quickly.
Instead, Mal has stuck around.
Bernie has made it increasingly clear she’d rather put distance between them, but Mal seems reluctant to fade into the background. The more he lingers, the more uncomfortable viewers become.
‘This Mal fella is beyond odd,’ one fan wrote, while another admitted: ‘Mal gives me the heebie jeebies.’
It’s not just awkwardness people are picking up on. It’s something darker.
At the same time as his connection with Bernie, Mal inserted himself into Roy Cropper’s life. Roy had been corresponding with a woman named Alice and had even considered meeting her. Then Mal appeared, claiming Alice was his wife.
Convenient timing.
Roy, feeling guilty for the emotional fallout, offered Mal electrician work at the café. But viewers quickly began questioning whether Alice even exists at all.

We’ve seen a mysterious man’s hand in scenes where ‘Alice’ was messaging Roy. The identity hasn’t been confirmed. But that hasn’t stopped the theories.
‘Is it just me but is Mal – actually the shortened version of ‘Malice’ and have we got a Phelan contender…. there is no Alice – poor Roy,’ one fan speculated.
Others have been less analytical and more horrified. ‘Howling at the deeply insane Mal,’ one viewer posted, as the storyline unfolded.
If Alice turns out to be fake, it wouldn’t just make Mal strange, it would make him calculating.
What’s really unsettling fans now is the fact Mal has no real reason to still be in Weatherfield, and yet he’s extending his stay.
He’s continued working for Roy. He keeps appearing at the café. And he keeps gravitating back towards Bernie, despite her obvious discomfort.
‘Mal is…a bit sinister, isn’t he’ one fan mused. Another was more direct: ‘Ok Mal is creeping me out now.’
The dominant fan theory now? That Mal is heading for full stalker territory, with Bernie as his target.
The signs are there: an intense first meeting, a refusal to let go, and a convenient excuse to stay close by thanks to work connections. Add in the possible catfishing of Roy and you’ve got a character who may be far more manipulative than he lets on.
As fans eagerly await Mal to show his true colours, the mood is clear: Weatherfield doesn’t trust him, and it seems things will only get darker from here.
