Nigerian newspapers review: [2027] Reps cave in, back Senate on Electoral Act amendment

In today’s Nigerian newspapers review programme, Today in the News, Vanguard’s lead headline states that the police tear-gassed protesters demanding compulsory electronic transmission of results ahead of the 2027 general election, while minority lawmakers staged a walkout from the House of Representatives over controversial provisions in the Electoral Act Amendment Bill, deepening unrest at the National Assembly.

Another headline states that bandits abducted six travellers, including four members of the Ansaarudeen Islamic Society, along the Naka-Makurdi road in Benue State on Tuesday morning and are demanding N100 million ransom for their release.

Vanguard also reports that a $400 million construction equipment deal has been sealed between Dangote Group and XCMG Construction Machinery Co., Ltd. to fast-track the expansion of the Dangote Petroleum Refinery & Petrochemicals from 650,000 to 1.4 million barrels per day, a move expected to make it the world’s largest refinery.

Moving to the next paper, The Guardian leads with Nigeria’s 2027 elections taking shape as the National Assembly approved manual transmission as a fallback to electronic failure, effectively granting the ruling All Progressives Congress majority influence over contested transmission rules and paving the way for legal and political battles.

Also, The Punch reports that key infrastructure and service-delivery ministers are facing a sharp funding crunch, as figures reveal that MDAs were allocated under N1trillion for capital projects between January and July 2025.

Lastly, The Nation reports that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) detained former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai for a second night at its Abuja headquarters, with indications he could remain in custody pending a court-approved remand order.
