New York – United Nations Secretary-General, António Guterres, has expressed his optimism that the ongoing indirect negotiations between Iran and the United States will lead to decisive and constructive results. Speaking to journalists in New York, Stephane Dujarric, the Spokesperson for the Secretary-General, welcomed the continuation of these discussions, which were initially hosted by the Sultanate of Oman before moving to Geneva, Switzerland, for the second round. Guterres emphasised his hope that these diplomatic efforts will successfully reduce regional tensions and prevent the escalation of a larger crisis that could have far-reaching global consequences.

The indirect talks between Tehran and Washington commenced on February 6 in Muscat, where both delegations exchanged a series of views and approaches through Omani mediation. Following the initial sessions in Muscat, it was agreed that the dialogue would continue in Geneva to further explore potential solutions. The Secretary-General stressed the vital importance of resolving such conflicts in accordance with the United Nations Charter, reiterating that a peaceful resolution is essential for maintaining international stability and security.
