LAFIA — The Nasarawa State House of Assembly has passed into law a bill to amend the Nasarawa State Electricity Law 2024, aimed at strengthening power supply and improving electricity delivery across the state.

Speaker of the House, Danladi Jatau, announced the passage following deliberation on the report of the House Standing Committee on Works and Transport during Tuesday’s plenary.

Jatau said the amendment, when assented to by Governor Abdullahi Sule, would boost electricity supply and ensure more stable power across the state. He directed the Clerk of the House to produce a clean copy of the bill for transmission to the governor for assent.

Earlier, Majority Leader Suleiman Yakubu Azara moved the motion for the bill to scale third reading, which was seconded by Minority Leader Luka Iliya Zhekaba. The House unanimously passed the bill into law.

Service Commission Amendment Scales Second Reading

During the same sitting, lawmakers passed for second reading a bill to amend the Re-Enacted Nasarawa State House of Assembly Service Commission Law 2023.

Sponsor of the bill, Daniel Ogah Ogazi, said the amendment seeks to align the commission with global best legislative practices, particularly regarding staff positions, benefits, and remuneration.

“We are amending this law in line with international best practices,” he said.

The motion was seconded by Onarigu Onah Kana and unanimously adopted. The Speaker committed the bill to the House Committee on Rules and Business, to be chaired by its Vice Chairman, Abel Yakubu Bala, with a report due on April 6, 2026.

Other Bills Advance

The House also passed into first reading a bill to amend the Nasarawa State House of Assembly Financial Management Law 2021. The bill, sponsored by Ogazi and seconded by Ibrahim Abdullahi Sa’ad, is scheduled for second reading on March 30, 2026.

Similarly, a bill to establish the Nasarawa Urban and Rural Access Road Authority (NURARA) — aimed at managing, developing, rehabilitating, and maintaining Class C and Class D roads — passed first reading. The bill, sponsored by Azara and seconded by Zhekaba, is slated for second reading on March 31, 2026.

Assembly Proceeds on Ramadan Recess

The Speaker announced that lawmakers have proceeded on Ramadan recess and will resume plenary on March 30, 2026.
