Nigerian rapper and songwriter Vector Tha Viper, born Olanrewaju Ogunmefun, explained that he views church not as a physical building, but as a spiritual reality within the individual.

Speaking on a recent episode of the BTC Podcast, the “Early Momo” crooner said he believes the concept of church refers to the human being rather than an edifice.

According to him, scripture emphasises that God is concerned with the condition of the heart, not attendance at a structure.

“I don’t believe in church as an edifice or a building,” Vector said during the interview. “I believe in church as a human being, because even the Bible points to the fact that it is your heart that God is interested in.”

The rapper referenced a text attributed to Thomas, which suggests that the “kingdom” is neither located in the sky nor in the waters but exists within and around individuals.

Quoting from the passage, he argued that self-knowledge and personal spiritual awareness are central to faith.

“Also, I read a page alleged to be from Thomas, and one of the statements read: ‘Behold, if the people that lead you tell you the kingdom is in the sky, then the birds of the sky precede you. If they tell you the kingdom is in the waters, then the fishes precede you.

“Rather, the kingdom is both inside of you and outside of you. If you know yourselves, you will become known, and you would realise that you are the sons of the living Father. But if you would not know yourself, you will dwell in poverty, and the poverty would be you.’”

He further stated that if the kingdom were confined to a physical church, then symbols such as the altar would become more important than the worshipper.

“So, if the kingdom is in the church, then the altar is more important than you. The kingdom is a conglomerate of believers, but it is rooted in the individualism of your saving. You are saved individually by connecting to God.”

Despite his position, Vector clarified that he does not oppose Christians who choose to attend church services, noting that his view is a matter of personal conviction rather than criticism of others’ practices.
