Kalu emerges APC leader, vows 25% votes for Tinubu in Abia

Bende, Abia State — Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Kalu, has expressed confidence that Abia State will deliver more than the constitutionally required 25 per cent of votes to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the 2027 presidential election.

Kalu made the declaration on Sunday during a pre-congress meeting of APC stakeholders at his country home in Bende, where party leaders unanimously adopted President Tinubu as the party’s sole presidential candidate and elected Kalu as APC state leader in Abia.

Addressing party members, Kalu highlighted a surge in APC membership across the state, noting that over 160,000 members were registered during the recent digital exercise despite logistical challenges. He pledged that the party, now bolstered by political heavyweights including former commissioners, speakers, senators, and House of Representatives members, would “spring surprises” in the 2027 elections.

He also emphasized unity and internal democracy, urging members to agree on consensus candidates ahead of upcoming ward and local government congresses and warning against factionalism.

The meeting was attended by prominent APC figures, including Senator Nkechi Nwogu, former Minister Emeka Wogu, former Speakers Martins Azubuike and Stanley Ohajuruka, among others. A celebratory cake was also cut in honour of Abia APC chieftain and industrialist Odinaka Igwe.
