A member of the Nigeria Environmental Society, Dr. Valentine Opone, has described President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s appointment of former Delta State Governor, Ifeanyi Okowa, as South-South Renewed Hope Initiative Coordinator as commendable.
Opone said the decision places the mantle of leadership on Okowa to champion Tinubu’s re-election bid in 2027, describing the former governor as a people-oriented leader with deep political experience in the South-South region.
In a statement, the Registered Environmental Specialist (USA) said Okowa’s wealth of experience across various levels of governance makes him an ideal candidate for the role, expressing confidence in his ability to mobilise support across the zone.
He noted that Okowa previously served as local government chairman in Ika Council, Commissioner for Agriculture, Secretary to the Delta State Government, and Senator representing Delta North Senatorial District before becoming governor.
Opone also credited Okowa with galvanising support for the election of the incumbent Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, a former Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly.
He said the President’s decision to appoint Okowa reflects recognition of his strategic influence in Delta State and across the South-South region.
“The appointment is well deserved, given the wealth of experience Okowa has garnered over the years, as well as his robust strategic influence at home in Delta State and across the entire South-South region. I am fully confident that Okowa and his team will achieve great success in the task ahead,” the statement said.
Opone further highlighted Okowa’s achievements while in office, including investments in infrastructure and agriculture, improvements in education and healthcare delivery, and strengthening of the state’s security network.
He added that residents continue to commend the former governor for his inclusive leadership style, progressive policies, and efforts in sustaining peace and unity in the state.
According to him, the people of the South-South region are likely to view the appointment as another milestone in regional representation within the President’s political structure.
