Chelsea forward Liam Delap has called his missed open goal chance during Friday’s FA Cup fourth round game against Hull City ‘silly,’ and he admitted he should have scored with his second try.

Chelsea beat Hull City 4-0 at the MKM Stadium and secured their place in the fifth round.

Even though Delap had a good chance to score, he ended up being criticized by the fans for the wrong reasons.

With the game still scoreless, Delap put pressure on Hull City’s goalkeeper, Dillon Phillips, for the ball. Phillips tried to clear it, but the ball was blocked by the striker.

Delap began to celebrate, but the ball hit the bottom part of the crossbar and then rolled away from the goal.

The ex-Ipswich Town player did get to the ball but did not rush to shoot at goal. His attempt was stopped by Phillips who got back quickly.

After the match, Delap made a joke about the strange moment, saying he thought the ball had gone into the net.

He told BBC One, “I swear, I almost ran off, I thought it was inside. I thought the ball went in, and then I was waiting for the referee to blow his whistle. I should have put it in again the second time. It’s kind of silly of me, but yeah, it’s crazy.”

The 23-year-old, however, made it up by giving three assists, which brought his total goal contributions for the Blues this season to six in 24 matches across all competitions.
