The ancient town of Argungu is brimming with anticipation as no fewer than 40,000 fishermen converge on Matan Fada, the iconic riverside arena of the world-renowned Argungu Fishing Festival.

From the early hours of the day, determined anglers took strategic positions nearly two kilometres from the riverbank, preparing for the much-awaited rush into the waters in pursuit of the biggest catch.
The atmosphere is electric, with chants, drumbeats and colourful displays reflecting the rich cultural heritage that has made Argungu a global tourism spectacle.

Commissioner for Information and Culture Yakubu Ahmed said, “Early-arriving guests have already filled designated seating areas, awaiting the arrival of President and Commander-in-Chief Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who is expected to grace the grand finale alongside his host, Kebbi State Governor Nasir Idris.

“Also expected are governors from across the federation, federal ministers, diplomats, captains of industry, traditional rulers and other high-profile personalities, underscoring the national and international significance of the four-day cultural extravaganza.

“Security has been tightened around the venue as excitement builds toward the dramatic plunge — the defining moment of the festival when thousands surge into the river simultaneously, armed with traditional fishing tools.

“Spectators and tourists from across Nigeria and beyond are watching closely, eager to witness who will land the giant fish that will crown this year’s edition.”

As all roads lead to Argungu, the world’s attention is fixed on Matan Fada, where tradition, competition and prestige collide in one of Africa’s most spectacular cultural celebrations.
