The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has clarified the rationale behind the scheduled dates for the 2027 General Election, following concerns from stakeholders about possible clashes with nationally recognised holidays and observances.

In a press statement issued on February 13, 2026, and signed by National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Mohammed Kudu Haruna, the Commission said the timetable was prepared in strict compliance with the 1999 Constitution (as amended), the Electoral Act 2022, and the INEC Regulations and Guidelines for the Conduct of Elections.

According to the Commission, its regulations—effective since 2019—stipulate that presidential and National Assembly elections must be held on the third Saturday of February in a general election year, while governorship and State Houses of Assembly elections are to take place two weeks later.

Based on these provisions, INEC fixed:

Saturday, February 20, 2027 – Presidential and National Assembly elections

Saturday, March 6, 2027 – Governorship and State Houses of Assembly elections

INEC, however, acknowledged concerns raised by stakeholders regarding the coincidence of the scheduled dates with certain national holidays and observances. The Commission assured Nigerians that it remains sensitive to issues that may affect voter participation and the smooth conduct of elections.

It disclosed that consultations are ongoing and that it may seek legislative intervention if adjustments become necessary, provided such changes remain consistent with constitutional and statutory requirements.

The Commission reaffirmed its commitment to transparency, inclusivity, and the credible conduct of the 2027 General Election, pledging to keep the public informed of any further developments.
