I've been through a fairly extensive trouble shooting process for this issue with AI, as the support from the owners of these apps (at least MyBMW and Lufthansa) have not been able to help, at least to this point. My AI "helper" generated this content for this post. Note that it has been focusing on WebView issues, but I instructed it to exclude that conclusion. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Environment / context:

  • Location: United States
  • Phone model: Google Pixel 10 Pro XL
  • Android version: Android 16
  • Security patch level: Latest available (device is always kept fully up to date; exact patch string not currently visible)
  • Default browser: Microsoft Edge

Hello.

I’m encountering the same failure pattern across multiple unrelated Android apps, all stalling immediately after MFA with no user‑visible error messaging.

Affected apps

  1. MyBMW (previously working, now broken)
  2. Lufthansa (recently downloaded; newly created account)
  3. CLEAR (recently downloaded)

Observed behavior (user‑visible only)

MyBMW app

  • App opens to what appears to be a web-based login screen
  • Credentials are accepted
  • After login, the app shows an indeterminate spinner and never completes launch

At the failure point:

  • When certain action is taken the following error point code appears on a black page
    • "error": "invalid_client",
  • "error_description": "Client authentication failed (e.g., login failure, unknown client, no client authentication included or unsupported authentication method)" }
  • No timeout message
  • No retry option

BMW support confirmed no known outage and walked me through resets, reinstalls, and update checks. However, online source here and elsewhere detected recent outages, but that seems unrelated to this issue, or their fix did not address my issue.

Lufthansa app

  1. App launches normally
  2. Credentials accepted
  3. MFA code accepted
  4. Screen transitions to an indefinite loading spinner
  5. App never reaches the main UI

Again:

  • No error dialog
  • No toast
  • No banner
  • No explanatory text

CLEAR app

  • Fresh install
  • Login succeeds
  • MFA succeeds
  • Immediately transitions to an infinite spinner

No error dialog, system message, crash, or network warning.

Why this seems notable

  • Three unrelated vendors (other than two being German companies)
  • Same failure point: immediately after successful MFA
  • Same symptom: infinite loading with zero error messaging
  • Affects both new installs and a previously working app
  • Same device, OS, and browser configuration across all cases

From a user perspective, the apps appear initially responsive but are effectively unusable.

Neutral diagnostics context

I haven’t seen:

  • Any user‑visible error strings (except MyBMW per above)
  • Any retry or fallback UI
  • Any crash or system‑level warning

What I’m hoping to learn

If anyone has encountered or debugged situations where:

  • Authentication appears to succeed
  • The app never fully transitions out of a loading state
  • And no user‑visible error is surfaced

I’d appreciate pointers on:

  • Where issues like this commonly originate
  • What shared state or configuration is worth inspecting
  • What additional data is most helpful to gather next

Thanks in advance.
