Former Chiefs captain warns Amakhosi on Zamalek

The mighty Kaizer Chiefs are 90 minutes away from marching into the CAF Confederation Cup, where Egyptian giants Zamalek will have a big say.

Group D standings show Amakhosi at the summit with 10 points, while Zamalek sit in third position with 7 points. With Al Masry in second place with 8 points, Kaizer Chiefs will need at least a draw to advance.

According to Neil Tovey, a man with over 300 appearances for Kaizer Chiefs, Zamalek, known as the White Knights, will be a serious test of character.

“Chiefs do have a chance of finishing top of Group D, but Zamalek in Egypt are going to be very, very difficult,” Neil Tovey told KickOff.

“Chiefs have got to be careful and not try to go there and defend, but at the same time, they must be careful and very organised at the back,” Tovey added.

“It’s a hard process, but it’s something that you need to manage. The Confederation Cup is never easy,” the Kaizer Chiefs icon concluded.

Tovey remains one of the most important figures in Kaizer Chiefs’ history. He was a major leader during the club’s dominant 1990s run.

By 1992, he had taken over the captaincy from Howard Freese, and in that same season, he started 52 matches, setting a club record for the most appearances in a single campaign.

Across ten seasons in gold and black, he made roughly 364 starts in all competitions, including 341 league appearances, while still contributing 32 goals from defence.

Three league titles and multiple domestic cups followed during his time, and the nicknames “Mokoko” and “Mr Experience” were coined by supporters who understood what he meant to Kaizer Chiefs.
