Wuthering Heights: Margot Robbie Movie Is Best Enjoyed Knowing This Beforehand

With Wuthering Heights arriving in United States theaters this weekend, there are a few things that audiences might want to know about the Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi movie beforehand.

Wuthering Heights — which is stylized with quotation marks, meaning the title is technically “Wuthering Heights” — is the new period romance movie written and directed by Emerald Fennell, with this being Fennell’s third feature film after 2020’s Promising Young Woman and 2023’s Saltburn. It is based on the iconic 1847 novel written by Emily Brontë.

Robbie plays Catherine “Cathy” Earnshaw in the movie, while Jacob Elordi portrays Heathcliff. The cast also includes Hong Chau as Nelly Dean, Shazad Latiff as Edgar Linton, Alison Oliver as Isabella Linton, Martin Clunes as Mr. Earnshaw, and Ewan Mitchell as Joseph.

What should people know about Wuthering Heights beforehand?

Fennell’s Wuthering Heights movie is a very loose adaptation of the novel, meaning fans of the book who are going into the film expecting it to perfectly portray all aspects of Brontë’s work should adjust their expectations.

The reason for the quotation marks in the title, in fact, is because Fennell believes her movie is a “version” of Wuthering Heights rather than an adaptation. She told Fandango, “The thing for me is that you can’t adapt a book as dense and complicated and difficult as this book. I can’t say I’m making Wuthering Heights. It’s not possible. What I can say is I’m making a version of it. There’s a version that I remembered reading that isn’t quite real. And there’s a version where I wanted stuff to happen that never happened. And so it is Wuthering Heights, and it isn’t.”

Additionally, when tackling romance movies, Fennell has a reputation for putting in some steamy content. Similar to Saltburn, some who have already seen the film are complaining that there’s too much of it in there, while others are complaining that there isn’t enough. This means that audiences’ mileage may vary on this topic, but it’s certainly something that people will be talking about in the days and weeks to come.

Thursday night showings for Wuthering Heights, which is being released through Warner Bros. Pictures, begin tonight.
