Two suspected herders arrested, 39 animals impounded in Benue Grazing Law crackdown

Joint security operatives in Benue State on Tuesday arrested two suspected herders and impounded 39 animals during an enforcement operation in Agwabi Village, Buruku Local Government Area.

Security sources disclosed to Zagazola Makama that the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in Buruku received a report at about 2 pm from the chairman of Buruku LGA, Mr Raymond Aondoakura Zege, alleging that some herders were openly grazing in contravention of existing local regulations.

Acting on the information, the DPO mobilised a joint patrol team comprising police officers, soldiers, operatives of Operation Anyam Nyor and members of the Benue State Civil Protection Guards to the area.

“Upon arrival at the location, two suspects, Ali Abubakar and Yahaya Bello, were apprehended,” a security source said. “A total of 22 cows and 17 sheep found grazing in violation of the law were also impounded.”

The suspects and the seized animals have been handed over to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) for further investigation and necessary action.

A community leader in the area said the swift intervention helped to avert potential tension between farmers and herders.

“This action is to prevent possible clashes and ensure strict compliance with the state’s grazing laws,” the leader stated. “We are appealing for sustained enforcement to maintain peace and order in our communities.”
