Nigerian newspapers review: US Reps propose visa ban on Kwankwaso, Miyetti Allah, others

In today’s Nigerian newspapers review programme, Today in the News, Vanguard leads with US lawmakers introducing a bill alleging religious persecution and killings of Christians in Nigeria, proposing to designate Fulani militias as terrorists and impose sanctions on certain Nigerians, including NNPP’s 2023 presidential candidate, Rabiu Kwankwaso.

Another headline states that Nigeria’s capital imports surged to a record $21 billion in the first 10 months of 2025, a 75% increase from roughly $12 billion in the corresponding period of 2024, according to the Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Dr. Jumoke Oduwole.

Vanguard also reports that Akoko in Edo Local Government Area of Edo State has reportedly come under renewed threat from kidnappers, with five people, including a police officer, abducted in two separate incidents carried out by suspected gunmen.

Moving to the next paper, The Guardian leads with northern leaders faulting the increasing focus on the 2027 elections, warning that it distracts from urgent national concerns, as a fresh report shows that violent clashes in 2025 resulted in 4,654 deaths and 3,141 kidnappings nationwide.

Next paper, The Punch reports that the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Aneke, on Wednesday condemned reports of plans by certain individuals to violently subvert Nigeria’s democracy, declaring that perpetrators would face the full wrath of the law.

Lastly, The Nation’s top headline states that Lagos and Ogun states on Wednesday began sensitising residents on President Bola Tinubu’s achievements, with Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu inaugurating Renewed Hope Ambassadors to drive the campaign across local government areas and wards.
