The North East Health Awareness Forum (NEHCAF) has decried the paltry release of N36 million out of the N218 billion capital allocation earmarked for Nigeria’s federal health sector, representing less than 0.02 per cent of the approved funds.

NEHCAF raises concern over the discrepancy, saying it underscores the urgent need for a thorough investigation into the funding process to ensure accountability.

In a statement jointly signed by its chairman, Abdullahi Ahmad, and secretary, Ummu Kulsum Rabiu, the forum questioned the transparency surrounding the disbursement of the funds, describing the situation as worrisome.

The group said its attention was drawn to media reports quoting the Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Professor Mohammed Ali Pate, as stating that only N36 million had been released out of the N218 billion appropriated for capital projects in the health sector.

“It is alarming to learn that only N36 million has been received by the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare out of the staggering N218 billion earmarked for this critical sector,” the statement read.

“Nigerians deserve a properly funded and well-equipped healthcare system capable of meeting the needs of citizens, especially under a democratic system of governance.”

The group called on relevant authorities, civil society organisations, and the media to work collaboratively to address the issue and ensure improved accountability in the health sector.
