The Zamfara State Government has set up a task force that would begin crackdown on unregulated sale of medicines to combat the menace of fake drugs across the state.
The State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Nafisa Muhammad Maradun, revealed this recently in a meeting in Gusau.
Represented by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Health, Malam Bashir Sirajo, Dr Maradun described the unchecked hawking of drugs in public spaces—such as markets, streets, and motor parks—as a serious public health and security concern.
Dr. Maradun said this illegal trade not only contributes to the rise of drug-resistant infections but also often operates within larger criminal networks. To address this, the State Security Council has directed the Ministry of Health to lead a multi-agency effort in drafting a clear, enforceable, and long-term action plan.
“Our goal is to end the illegal sale of medicines, define precise enforcement roles, and ensure continuous public awareness—not just temporary crackdowns,” she stated. Progress updates will be submitted to the State Security Council every three months.
The proposed strategy emphasizes stronger coordination and accountability among agencies responsible for drug regulation and law enforcement. “This is a matter of saving lives,” Dr. Maradun said.
“Through collective effort, consistent monitoring, and strict enforcement, we can rebuild trust in Zamfara’s drug distribution system.”
While the Department of Pharmaceutical Services oversees licensed pharmacies and vendors, the scale of the problem demands broader collaboration, including inspections, arrests, and legal action where needed.
Representatives from key regulatory bodies, including the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) and the Pharmacy Council of Nigeria (PCN), voiced their support.
