Higher education in West Africa continues to grow in global visibility and quality, with several institutions making notable strides in research, teaching and international collaboration.
The most commonly referenced global ranking systems include: Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings which evaluates universities worldwide based on teaching reputation, research environment, citation impact, international outlook and industry income. The other is QS World University Rankings which assess institutions on academic and employer reputation, faculty/student ratios, research citations, and international faculty and student presence.
This list highlights the most highly regarded universities in West Africa for 2026 based on global rankings and regional academic performance.
1. University of Cape Coast (Ghana)
The University of Cape Coast (UCC) has emerged as one of the strongest institutions in West Africa, especially in Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2026, where it was featured in the global 801–1000 band — making it one of the region’s best-ranked universities. THE also highlighted UCC’s notable performance in research quality and international outlook, positioning it among the very top in West Africa.
2. University of Ghana, Legon (Ghana)
