Keke Palmer Explains How Motherhood Helped Her Prepare for The ‘Burbs Role

Keke Palmer portrayed a mother for the first time on screen in The Burbs. The actress opened up about how her own experience of motherhood was crucial in understanding and portraying her new role in the series. She welcomed her son, Leodis, in February 2023.

Keke Palmer’s most recent project, The Burbs, saw her step into the shoes of a mother for the first time on screen. Thankfully, her own journey of motherhood came before this.

In a new interview with PEOPLE, Palmer explained how she used her own experience as a mom while portraying a mother on the new Peacock series. “I definitely did. I mean, I think postpartum is something that we think just happens in the beginning after a mom has a baby, but it’s like a lifelong thing,” the One of Them Days actress said.

“So, I think going back to that beginning stage of remembering what it was like when my son Leodis was first born and just that protectiveness and how it became something that made every bit of danger become that much more fearful and that much more large,” she added.

Keke Palmer continued, “And I think the reality for [my character] Samira is that the danger is real, but where it’s placed and how to engage with it is the part that becomes difficult, especially after becoming a new mom…But I definitely related it to just that protectiveness.”

The 32-year-old actress had her first child in February 2023 with ex-boyfriend Darius Jackson.

Prior to this interview, Palmer also spoke about playing a mother on screen during her appearance on Today. “I guess I should have expected it. After you have kids, it really does expand your heart in a way you can’t imagine until it happens,” she said there, “And so, I definitely put that into the character Samira for sure.”

The Burbs premiered on February 8, 2026, with all eight episodes. It is currently streaming on Peacock.
