Protesters storm National Assembly over electronic transmission of results

There is heavy security presence at the National Assembly in Abuja as protesters gather at the entrance of the complex, insisting on the inclusion of “real-time electronic transmission” in the electoral amendment bill.

The demonstrators, under the banner of “Occupy National Assembly”, said the Senate must be explicit in its provision for electronic transmission of election results, despite recent clarifications by the upper chamber denying it rejected the move.

Members of the Nigeria Police Force, the Nigerian Army and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps were seen at the scene.

Members of civil society organisations, a handful of opposition African Democratic Congress (ADC) members and some women’s groups were present at the entrance of the complex as the demonstration began.

On Sunday, human rights activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, announced that the National Opposition Movement would stage a demonstration against what he described as the “removal of electronic transmission of election results”.

In a post on his verified X handle, Sowore alleged that the move was aimed at undermining the credibility of future elections and urged Nigerians to mobilise in support of the #OccupyNASS protest.

Details later.
