A ‘twisted’ cannibal love story starring a 2026 Oscar nominee is available to stream on BBC iPlayer now.
Originally released in 2022 and already streaming on Amazon Prime, the film follows a young woman who embarks upon an arduous trek across America after developing a fascination with cannibalism.
Along the way, Maren (Escape Room star Taylor Russell) meets free-spirited Lee, played by three-time Oscar nominee Timothée Chalamet.
The 30-year-old Dune star is the youngest actor to ever achieve this milestone at such an age, for roles in A Complete Unknown and this year’s Marty Supreme.
His first best actor nomination came from Call Me By Your Name in 2017, which was also helmed by this film’s director, Luca Guadagnino.
This week, the BBC has added the pair’s Bones and All to its iPlayer catalogue for licence-paying viewers to dig in.
Almost four years since its release, Bones and All boasts an impressive 82% ‘fresh’ score on Rotten Tomatoes.
This includes Film Speak, who dubbed the film a ‘tour-de-force’ while heaping praise upon the ‘career-best’ performances from stars Russell and Chalamet.
Discussing Film called it an ‘instant coming-of-age classic,’ while Radio Times noted that it was ‘unexpectedly tender’ in spite of its morbid subject matter.
Users of the review aggregator were even more consumed by Bones and All’s blend of romance and violence, with user Chimpo describing it as ‘twisted and blood-soaked.’
Cece 2 called it a ‘visceral cannibal love story,’ while Maryam M agreed that it was ‘horrifying and beautiful.’
‘Taylor and Timothée compose this absurd melody with delicate and masterful performances,’ wrote João V, adding: ‘it is a cutting thing, that cuts so deep that it reaches the bone.’
In addition to Russell and Chalamet, Bones and All also stars Sir Mark Rylance as the creepy ‘eater’ Sully.
The BFG star is no stranger to an Oscar himself, having previously won the Academy Award for best supporting actor in 2016 for his part in Bridge of Spies.
‘Yeah, it’s a really curious genre,’ he told British GQ about the curious mash-up of horror and romance in Bones and All.
‘It’s a road movie, but it’s also like a Bonnie and Clyde romance. And they happen to be eating people. So it’s got a very thoughtful aspect to it about things that we inherit from our parents.’
Likening it to Guadagino and Chalamet’s previous collaboration, he described it as ‘a little bit like Call Me By Your Name, in terms of discovering you are gay, something you didn’t know about yourself’.
‘How do you deal with that? Thankfully, in the West it’s easier now than, say, if you discovered that in Afghanistan or somewhere where it would be a death sentence.’
The film’s gorier sequences gained notoriety upon release, thanks to stories of cinemagoers vomiting and fainting during screenings.
Speaking to the Irish Times, Guadagnino said: ‘I heard about people fainting and some people also throwing up, some screaming.
‘Of course, in a way, I am delighted because if a movie, if any movie moved somebody to that degree, then the movie has something to say, somehow, or has hit a chord.
‘But at the same time, I hope that the element comes from the discomfort of dealing with the depth of what these characters go through and not with the shock value of it.’
Bones and All is available to stream on BBC iPlayer now.
