BENIN CITY—Two suspected kidnappers, alleged to have abducted a doctor, Abu Ibrahim, and his brother, Abu Tahir—whom they reportedly killed—have been arrested at Edo State University Teaching Hospital, Auchi, Etsako West Local Government Area.
The suspects were apprehended early Sunday after Ibrahim recognized them at the hospital. They had reportedly come to the facility to check on one of the suspects receiving medical treatment in the emergency ward when Ibrahim identified them as some of his kidnappers.
The two men were initially abducted in January at Igbira Camp in Auchi, near the military barracks. Vanguard gathered that the suspects had recently been seen in Auchi town accompanied by two individuals in military uniforms.
Community leaders, including Alhaji Rilwanu Bonvist Oshiobugie and the Daudu of Igbe, Chief Yekini Sado, described the arrests as a major breakthrough in the fight against kidnapping in Auchi. They called for a thorough investigation to uncover the wider network behind the recent spate of kidnappings in Auchi and Edo North. The leaders also commended the efforts of Governor Monday Okpebholo, noting that his interventions are yielding positive results.
Following the arrests, the Commissioner of Police, Monday Agbonika, ordered that the suspects be transferred to the State Police Command Headquarters for further investigation.
A statement by the Police Public Relations Officer, Eno Ikoedem, identified the suspects as Idris Abubakar and Sani Abubakar.
