KANO—Tragedy struck Kano on Sunday as over 30 people reportedly lost their lives in a horrific road accident at Kwanar Barde in Gezawa Local Government Area of the state.
The accident, which occurred in the early hours of Sunday, involved a trailer heading towards Gujungu that allegedly crashed due to reckless driving. Several others sustained serious injuries in the incident.
Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf confirmed the tragedy in a statement issued by his spokesperson, Sanusi Bature, expressing sympathy and condolences to the families of the deceased.
The governor directed the Kano State Ministry of Health to ensure that all accident victims admitted to hospitals receive free and adequate medical care without delay. He also instructed the Office of the Special Adviser on Humanitarian Affairs to assess casualties and implement measures to support the victims’ families.
Describing the incident as heartbreaking, Governor Yusuf said it was a great loss not only to the affected families but to the entire people of Kano State. He prayed for the speedy recovery of those receiving treatment and for the peaceful repose of the souls of the deceased.
The governor also cautioned motorists, particularly drivers of heavy-duty vehicles, to avoid reckless driving and adhere strictly to traffic regulations to prevent similar tragedies.
Meanwhile, the Kano command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) had yet to issue an official statement on the incident. Efforts to reach the FRSC spokesperson, Abdullahi Labaran, for comment were unsuccessful at the time of filing this report.
