The Amasiri Clan in Afikpo local government area of Ebonyi State has demanded for immediate withdrawal of military forces from community.
The clan called for independent investigation into killings, arrests, and property destruction by suspected warlords in Okporojọ in Edda community in January 29, 2026.
In statement made available to the international media and signed by Princess Joy Omagha Idam, Former Assistant Secretary NUJ FCT Council, Maduabichi Idam, Esq Human Rights Advocate, Chioma Okpara Journalist/Activist to draw urgent attention to a deepening humanitarian, constitutional, and security crisis unfolding in Ebonyi State, Nigeria.
The group called on restoration of schools, markets, worship, and economic life, reversal of collective sanctions, equal protection and justice without political bias, final statement
Nigeria is a constitutional democracy governed by the rule of law.
“The military must not be used for political vendetta or ethnic repression.
The people of Amasiri are not enemies of the state.
“We want the world to also Know that a Teacher from Amasiri went to Abakaliki to get the Pupils registered for the 2026 Common Entrance and was clearly told the governor instructed that no person from Amasiri should be registered.
“Also Students of Ebonyi State University are told to show NIN before admitted into the lecture Hall. Again we ask what Amasiri did to Governor Nwifuru??
“They are citizens entitled to life, dignity, security, justice, and historical truth.
“As we speak two of our Ezeogos and The Coordinator Amasiri Development centre are in detention over a week now.
” What began as an uninvestigated allegation has escalated into a full-scale military invasion, collective punishment of civilians, political repression, economic shutdown, and serious violations of fundamental human rights.
“Amasiri Clan comprises three autonomous communities and is the northernmost community in Afikpo Local Government Area (formerly Afikpo North LGA). We are law-abiding citizens now facing militarization, displacement, and institutional erasure.
“Over recent days, Amasiri communities have been subjected to an unprovoked and disproportionate military operation by Nigerian armed forces. These are civilian farming communities, not conflict zones. Mass arrests of unarmed men and youths invasion and destruction of homes continuous gunfire lasting from night to daybreak forced displacement of entire villages confirmed loss of lives following directives attributed to the Ebonyi State Government.
“Amasiri indigenes resident in Abakaliki were ordered to vacate the city, civil servants of Amasiri origin received verbal termination notices, students of Amasiri origin in tertiary institutions in Abakaliki were ordered to self-identify.
Additionally, through legislative action, Amasiri was removed from the list of development centres, detached from Afikpo LGA, placed under a joint administrative arrangement by four LGAs, resembling a colonial trust territory” the group stated.
Recalled that following the killing and behaving of four natives of Okporojọ village in Oso Edda on January 29, 2026, Governor Francis Nwifuru sacked all the leaders of the community including the traditional rulers.
The governor also shut all the public and private primary and secondary schools in Amasiri, Markets, churches, shops, and social activities were closed, farming, trading, and worship were halted due to curfew placed from 2pm to 10am among other measure to forestall peace in the area.
