The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has launched a 50-day rotational voter registration exercise across all 326 wards in Anambra State, aiming to register at least 80 to 90 percent of eligible non-registered voters.

The exercise, devolved to the ward level, is part of INEC’s effort to ensure widespread participation ahead of the 2027 general elections and the August 2026 Local Government and Councillorship elections.

Speaking at a media briefing in Awka, State Resident Electoral Commissioner Dr. Elizabeth Agwu said the forum was designed to foster collaboration between INEC and the media, combat misinformation, promote voter education, and build public trust in the electoral process.

Dr. Agwu noted that 4,423 new voters have been registered in Anambra within the first four weeks of the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise, which began January 5, 2026, and will run until April 17, 2026. She expressed satisfaction with the figures, attributing the success to support from political parties, media, and other stakeholders.

“The Commission under my watch in Anambra State is highly impressed with the exercise, and we believe that by the end of the nationwide registration, we will be among the states with the highest number of registered voters,” Agwu said.

She urged eligible residents aged 18 and above to register early to avoid last-minute congestion, adding that Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) from previous registration exercises are now available for collection at local government offices.

Dr. Agwu also praised the November 8, 2025 governorship election, describing it as the best-conducted election in the country, noting the real-time upload of results and the use of technology to reduce electoral malpractices.

During a strategy dialogue with the Nigeria Civil Society Situation Room in Abuja, she revealed that about 140,907 newly registered voters would collect their PVCs before the week’s end. INEC has also reserved 978 Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) machines for deployment across 5,720 polling units in the state.

Currently, Anambra boasts 2.803 million registered voters, all of whom participated in the November 2025 governorship election. Dr. Agwu stressed the critical role of the media in providing balanced reporting to safeguard democracy and ensure credible elections.
