The Convener of the BAT Ideological Group and National Coordinator of Accountability and Policy Monitoring, Mr. Bamidele Atoyebi, has called on the people and government of Kwara State to prioritise security and establish a clear state identity amid rising incidents of banditry.

Reacting to the escalating attacks, Atoyebi said insecurity in areas such as Oke-Ode, Ekiti-Kwara, Isin, and Kaiama poses a serious threat not only to lives and livelihoods but also to the state’s economic and strategic interests.

He warned that the persistent violence could be a calculated attempt to displace local populations and gain control of Kwara’s mineral resources, including tin, gold, lithium, and marble.

Atoyebi further highlighted Kwara’s strategic position as the “Gateway State,” noting that it borders Oyo, Ekiti, and Osun states. He stressed the need for stronger regional integration to effectively tackle cross-border security challenges.

According to him, Kwara should formally align with the Southwest Governors’ Forum and collaborate with the Western Nigeria Security Network, Amotekun, to implement localized security measures, particularly in forested areas that have become prone to attacks.

On governance, Atoyebi proposed the creation of Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) as a means of bringing administration closer to rural communities, improving security surveillance, and ensuring more efficient allocation of resources.

He also emphasised the importance of proactive leadership, calling for a “hands-on” governor who prioritises grassroots engagement, transparency, and effective governance over political optics.

“A definitive identity, secure borders, and accountable leadership are critical to transforming Kwara from a middle-belt afterthought into a thriving and self-sufficient state,” Atoyebi said.

He added that the next phase of leadership in the state must focus on protecting Kwara’s collective interests, irrespective of ethnic considerations, while building a secure and sustainable future for its people.
