The first few months of the year can often feel like an endurance test – a time when even our best intentions can run away from us.

But fear not, because Sir Mo Farah, king of the racetrack and Britain’s greatest ever endurance runner, is here to help you set goals and stay Mo-tivated to achieve them.

The ten-time gold champion has joined forces with peers including heptathlete Dame Jessica Ennis-Hill, wheelchair basketball champ Ade Adepitan MBE, and football star Leah Williamson OBE to form the Weetabix All-Stars.

Having achieved their ultimate goals, they want to inspire the nation to the to do the same – it’s a mission to help us Brits achieve our goals, bix by bix.

Here, Sir Mo – who memorably secured glory on Super Saturday in 2012 when he took gold on the same night as Dame Jessica – reveals how to get your Mo-jo back.

Start the day right

Breakfast, the saying goes, is the most important meal of the day – and that’s something the celebrated athlete can get on board with.

‘It’s important to fuel correctly for the day,’ he says. ‘At home, we take breakfast time seriously.

And that means breaking open the Weetabix.

‘It’s so easy and convenient,’ he says. ‘I am normally quite busy with a lot going on, and so the fact I can have a good, healthy breakfast in minimal time is really helpful to me.* **

‘But on top of that, it helps provide me with plenty of fibre, as well as vitamins and minerals too, and helps me keep going.’* **

Sir Mo likes to drench his three – yes, three! – ‘bix with warm milk.

Planning for success

Setting goals is how the sporting star ensures he stays motivated, even through retirement.

‘I’m a person who has to have a goal,’ he says. ‘If there isn’t a reason to do something, then I think: why?’

If you’re finding it hard to stick to your personal goals, are avoiding the gym, or feeling your willpower wane in some other way, what would Sir Mo recommend?

Where there’s willpower, there’s a way! All it takes is a little motivation – which Sir Mo says can come by way of a little reward (Picture: Nick Edwards)

‘Little rewards along the way are good motivation,’ says Sir Mo. ‘This is something that is supposed to be fun, and you are meant to enjoy. It isn’t a punishment.

‘So if you do something well, you are allowed to celebrate that and do something nice. Try and keep working towards doing something nice.’

Let others inspire you

Sir Mo was at the top of his game for nearly two decades – how on earth did he manage to motivate himself to perform at his peak for so long?

‘I often used to think about my rivals,’ he admits. ‘I thought they would be out training, and I didn’t want anyone to be training harder than me.

In the past, Sir Mo would use his rivals to motivate him – thinking about how hard they were training kept him moving (Picture: Nick Edwards)

‘Generally, each year I had one or two major races that I was focused on, and I used to think about how it would feel crossing the line winning those races, and that motivated me to get out and get it done.’

However, it wasn’t always easy. After crashing out of the games in 2008 after not making the final of the 5,000m, Sir Mo began to seriously question his future.

‘I was so disappointed. I felt I had let so many people down, and I started to think, ‘Is athletics for me?’ Luckily, I had good people around me who encouraged me to give it one more and get back out there.

‘I had good people around me who encouraged me’ ahead of the London games, says Sir Mo (Picture: Nick Edwards)

‘I still had to wait four years, but of course that was worth the wait in the end!’

So if you’re struggling too, just keep on going. Or, as Sir Mo puts it: ‘Success isn’t about being perfect every day, it’s about showing up, again and again.’

Be more Mo

It’s the breakfast of champions and Britain’s favourite cereal, and no wonder because Weetabix – now containing added Vitamin D – can help set you up for the day.

Weetabix is high in fibre, which is essential for digestion*, but also low in saturated fat, salt and sugar, so your body will thank you. **

Weetabix is a great choice for breakfast as it’s high in fibre, rich in iron and vitamins like thiamin, riboflavin and niacin (Picture: Nick Edwards)

And each bowl of bix (two biscuits) is rich in iron, which contributes to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue, and vitamins like thiamin, riboflavin and niacin, which help us get energy from our food.* **

Add some delicious milk or yoghurt for calcium and toppings to supercharge your bowl – maybe some nuts and seeds for protein or fruit for vitamin C.

Get creative – and remember, Weetabix isn’t just for breakfast, it’s a fantastic snack any time of the day!

Mo’s motivational tips

  1. Get your kit all laid out/ready the night before, so you get up in the morning and go.
  2. Get the right equipment. Wearing inappropriate footwear or clothing will hold you back.
  3. Put a picture of your goal up, or a motivational quote on the front door, so it is the last thing you see or read as you leave. Mo has a quote ‘Don’t dream of winning. Train for it.’
  4. Have a long-term goal, yes, but also set short-term goals to achieve along the way. When you hit a goal, give yourself a little reward.
  5. For running specifically,  follow a training programme either via a coach or a recognised online app (NB: Mo is a co-founder of URUNN, a new online coaching app!  Personalised running plans to push you further | URUNN).
  6. Be proactive in terms of looking after your body. Get massage and physio at regular intervals, not just when there is pain or a problem. Then it is too late
* Fibre contributes to an acceleration of intestinal transit. **Weetabix is a high fibre, low sugar, low salt food and is a good source of Thiamin, Riboflavin, Niacin and iron. Thiamin, Riboflavin, Niacin and iron contribute to normal energy-yielding metabolism as part of a healthy diet and lifestyle.
* **Thiamin, Niacin, folic acid contribute to normal psychological function as part of a healthy diet and lifestyle.
