…Hails INEC Over Invitation to Nenadi Usman
By John Alechenu

Abuja — The Labour Party (LP) has declared that its leadership crisis, which had stalled the party’s progress, has been resolved.

The party said this position was further reinforced by the decision of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to officially recognise Senator Nenadi Usman and Senator Darlington Nwokocha as its Interim National Chairman and Secretary, respectively, and to invite them to the Quarterly Consultative Meeting with leaders of political parties held in Abuja on Wednesday.

In a statement signed by the Senior Special Adviser to the Interim National Chairman, Mr Ken Asogwa, the party said the invitation was in compliance with the judgment of the Federal High Court delivered on January 21, 2026.

“Acting in compliance with the judgment of the Federal High Court delivered on 21st January 2026, and following the recognition of Senator Nenadi Usman and Senator Darlington Nwokocha as the Interim National Chairman and Secretary respectively of the Labour Party by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Friday, 30th January 2026, the leadership of the Labour Party today attended INEC’s Quarterly Consultative Meeting with leaders of political parties,” the statement read.

The party commended INEC for extending the invitation to its leadership and for what it described as the commission’s commitment to truth, justice and the rule of law.

It noted that while INEC had earlier complied with the court judgment by publishing the names of Senator Usman and Senator Nwokocha on its official portal, the invitation to the consultative meeting further affirmed and conferred full legitimacy on the current leadership of the party.

The Labour Party also praised the leadership of INEC, led by Prof. Joash Amupitan, for its steadfast adherence to the rule of law, describing his leadership as exemplary.

“As a minister in the temple of justice, his leadership skills, which we witnessed today, have proven him to be a round peg in a round hole,” the statement added.

While acknowledging that the leadership crisis which previously affected the party was protracted and challenging, the LP expressed satisfaction that the issue had now been conclusively resolved.

The party expressed gratitude to its supporters for their patience, resilience and unwavering faith, as well as to the media and other advocates of democracy who stood by it during the difficult period.

The Labour Party reaffirmed its commitment to democratic values, internal cohesion and constructive engagement with relevant stakeholders in the advancement of Nigeria’s democracy.
