The Botswana Prison Service (BPS) has launched a manhunt after a Zimbabwean woman escaped from custody at Gaborone Women’s Prison around midday on Wednesday, 4 February 2026.

Botswana authorities say the incident happened during the day, triggering an immediate search involving prison officials and other security agencies.

Suspected murderer escapes prison

In a statement released on Wednesday, BPS public relations officer Senior Superintendent Oagile Kojane identified the escapee as Stella Sibanda, a 50-year-old Zimbabwean national.

Sibanda is a resident of Mashibitlse Ward in Kopong and was being held on remand in connection with a murder charge at the time of her escape.

Security agencies launch search for prison escapee

According to Kojane, prison authorities are working closely with other security organs to track down the escaped inmate.

“Members of the Prison Service and other security organs are following the escape,” Kojane said.

Details surrounding how Sibanda managed to escape have not yet been made public.

Public urged to assist with information

The Botswana Prison Service has appealed to members of the public to assist with information that could lead to Sibanda’s recapture.

“Anyone with information leading to the arrest of the prisoner should contact Gaborone Women Prison at 3956276 or 73603794, or the Public Relations Office at 73083274,” Kojane said.

Members of the public have also been advised to report any sightings or information to the nearest police station or correctional facility.

Authorities have warned that members of the public should not attempt to apprehend the escapee themselves, but instead alert law enforcement immediately.
