The University of Lagos, UNILAG, recently celebrated one of its most illustrious scholars, Professor Akinsoya Olaidi Osibogun, as he was conferred with the title of Distinguished Professor during the 53rd convocation ceremonies.
The event, which drew academics, students, and dignitaries to the J. F. Ade Ajayi Auditorium, also featured the award of Postgraduate Diplomas, Master’s and Ph.D degrees, Best Ph.D awards, gold medals, and honorary doctorate degrees.
Osibogun, a former Chief Medical Director of the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, LUTH, widely celebrated for his humility and academic excellence, has made landmark contributions to public health in Nigeria and internationally.
He earned his Public Health degree from Columbia University, New York in 1984, and became a Fellow of the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria in 1989, achieving Fellowship with the West African College of Physicians in 1994.
In 2020, he was awarded the Doctor of Medicine degree by the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria.
Osibogun has served as a visiting lecturer at the Andreja Stampa School of Public Health, Croatia, a short-term consultant to the World Health Organisation (WHO) in Geneva, and was one of the rapporteurs for the WHO Working Group on Health Centres, producing technical reports on the role of health centres within district health systems in 1997.
Osibogun chaired the health and nutrition thematic section of Nigeria’s 2021–2025 National Development Plan, currently serves as chairman of the National Experts Review Committee on Polio Eradication and Immunisation. He led research efforts in Lagos State’s COVID-19 response, contributing to national guidance that helped Nigeria manage the outbreak effectively.
He also served as Chief Medical Director of the 800-bed Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) from 2006 to 2014 and as President of the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria from 2022 to 2023.
In his acceptance speech, Osibogun said: “This recognition is not only a personal honour but a celebration of the collective efforts of colleagues, students, and health professionals who have worked tirelessly to improve public health in Nigeria.”
His professional accolades include the Distinguished Fellowship Award of the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria and the Fellowship of the Nigerian Medical Association, the highest professional honour in Nigerian medicine.
Well-wishers described the conferment as a “man of great virtues and zest, humility personified, a professor of professors.”
Osibogun is married to Margaret Osibogun, and they are blessed with children. His career continues to inspire emerging health professionals, reinforcing UNILAG’s reputation as a centre of excellence in education, research, and national development.
