Kolkata: The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Tuesday raided around 12 addresses, some of which belonged to a cop and businessmen, in Burdwan West of West Bengal for money laundering in the coal smuggling scam and recovered a huge amount of cash from one of them.

At around 6 am, three ED teams, accompanied by central forces, reached the industrial belt of the district and launched the crackdown. The cop who faced the raid is Manoranjan Mondal of the state police, officer-in-charge (OC) of the Budbud police station under the Asansol-Durgapur police commissionerate. An ED team visited his house at Durgapur city centre area and questioned him about the illegal trade.
Mondal took charge of the police station a few days ago. He was earlier suspended in November of 2024 for many instances of inappropriate conduct, including a Trinamul Congress leader's birthday celebration at Baraboni police station while serving as the OC there.
Besides, a trader Prabir Dutta’s residence at Sepco Township, a businessman Rajesh Bansal’s house at Jamuria and coal trader Mainul Shah’s house at Nabagram in Pandabeswar were searched while the owners were grilled by the ED officers.
In the afternoon, bank officials with bags were brought to Bansal's house for counting of currency notes following the recovery of around ₹1 crore in cash. Residences of Bansal's two sons, Amit and Sumit were also raided. At Raniganj a businessman Kiran Khan’s house was also raided.
