This week’s A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms episode makes a shocking revelation in which a fortune teller reveals how Egg eventually dies. Her words paint a bleak picture for the young boy’s future. But is there any truth to her words? While book readers might already know the answer, show-only viewers are curious to learn where the squire ends up in his life.
Here’s a breakdown of the scene and the details about Egg’s future as per the books.

Is prophecy of how Egg dies in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms real?
In A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms’ latest episode, “The Squire,” Dunk and Egg encounter a fortune teller who offers her services. First, she reads Dunk’s fortune: “You shall know great success and be richer than a Lannister.”
Dunk then asks her to tell the boy’s fortune. She looks at the boy for a moment. Then she says, “You shall be king… and die in a hot fire, and worms shall feed upon your ashes. And all who know you shall rejoice in your dying.” While her somber words scare the boy, the hedge knight laughs it off.
In a world where magic exists and prophecies often come true, it is reasonable to worry about the boy’s future. Although some prophecies fail to materialize, this one sadly comes true, at least according to the book The World of Ice & Fire. So, how does the event unfold?
In the closing moments of the episode, Egg reveals himself to be a Targaryen. While he has not disclosed his name yet, book readers will know that he is Prince Aegon V Targaryen. He shaved his head to hide his identity. The boy is currently preceded in the line of succession by many Targaryens who have a legitimate claim to the Iron Throne. But a series of tragic events ultimately leads him to become king. He later earns the name Aegon the Unlikely.
In 259 AC, Aegon comes to believe that reviving dragons is the only way to convince other lords to implement his decrees, which aim to protect the smallfolk. While attempting to hatch dragon eggs, Aegon dies in the fire. The list of casualties includes Ser Duncan the Tall, who was the Lord Commander of the Kingsguard at the time, and Aegon’s son, Duncan Targaryen.
The incident eventually came to be known as the Tragedy at Summerhall.
