Silent Witness is back this week for grisly business as usual, with what is a whopping season 29 on the BBC.

The crack forensic crime team are gracing our screens for five two-part stories, in which Nikki (Emilia Fox) and Jack (David Caves) are finally newlyweds.

The chief change their new marital status has affected is that they are prone to making goo-goo eyes in the least sexy settings imaginable and sneaking kisses at crime scenes.

The couple have upped sticks from London and the longtime Lyell Centre and moved to a new base in Birmingham, where they unpack what must be a treasure trove of scalpels and bone saws.

But they’ve not gone solo, with Harriet (Maggie Steed) and Kit (Francesca Mills) in tow, because otherwise Silent Witness wouldn’t be Silent Witness.

There are none of the usual teething problems with such a big move, because the first episode on Monday night plunged us straight back into the bloody action.

There’s a hitman on the loose, leaving Nikki and Jack to hunt down the mysterious man with the surname Booth.

As if it doesn’t sound dramatic enough, things crank up to 11 when he claims responsibility for a murder that gripped the nation – and which another person is currently behind bars for.

The second part of The Disappearance of Alice Hill mini-narrative is set to air on Tuesday evening and in it, the police are (perhaps understandably) not best pleased with the forensic team’s dramatic overreach.

‘I’m not used to having my operational decisions questioned by pathologists,’ thunders DCI Jilly Bashir (Zita Sattar) to the team. Not that it’s going to make much difference to Nikki and Jack, if past escapades are anything to go by.

All it took was one episode to get BBC viewers back on board, with many already lapping up the fizzling out-in-the-open chemistry between our heroes.

Taking to X as the episode aired, Tegan Evelyn wrote: ‘Loved the start of the new series of Silent Witness. Love the new setup. The episode storyline had me gripped from the get-go. Oh how I’ve missed it.’

Meanwhile, fellow fan Hayley described it as an ‘outstanding’ return, writing: ‘What a way to open the new series of #SilentWitness. Outstanding from all involved. The perfect start to life in Brum. Bring on tomorrow.’

Silent Witness continues on BBC One at 9pm tonight and is available to watch on iPlayer.
