Electricity supply has been restored to the Nigerian High Commission in Pretoria, South Africa, after the diplomatic mission cleared outstanding municipal utility bills owed to the City of Tshwane.
The power supply was disconnected earlier on Monday as part of enforcement measures taken by the city over unpaid service charges.
Tshwane’s Executive Mayor, Nasiphi Moya, confirmed the action in a post on X, stating that the mission had accumulated debts for municipal services.
“We’ve disconnected electricity at the High Commission of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. They owe the city for utility services,” Moya wrote, alongside a photo of the building.
The development drew attention to the financial and administrative challenges sometimes faced by foreign missions in meeting operational obligations abroad.
In a subsequent update, the mayor confirmed that electricity would be reconnected once the debt was settled and later acknowledged that the High Commission had fulfilled its payment obligations.
“We thank the High Commission of the Federal Republic of Nigeria for honouring its debt to the city. The city will reconnect electricity,” she stated.
Power was restored after the outstanding balance was reportedly paid. As of the time of filing this report, the Nigerian High Commission had not released an official statement on the incident.
