Lucas Hay (Oscar Curtis) is set to make a decision about his future in Hollyoaks after he was jailed for taking dad Ste (Kieron Richardson) hostage.
The troubled teen, as viewers know, has been on a dark path for months, attacking his father and stalking ex Dillon Ray (Nathaniel Dass) after their break-up.
But his entire world crumbled over Christmas when he discovered that his dad Ste was having an affair with Dillon behind his back.
With revenge in mind, Lucas wasted little time in striking back against Ste and took the patriarch hostage in what proved to be a dramatic peak for the story in question.
The explosive showdown, which saw Lucas berate Ste and Dillon over their sordid affair, proved a pivotal moment not only for the character but also for star Oscar, with this being his ‘biggest’ scene yet.
The actor has proven a force to be reckoned with since taking over the role of Lucas three years ago, turning in top tier performances time and again amid a series of hard-hitting stories for his alter-ego, including conversion therapy, a powerful coming out scene and a brain tumour diagnosis.
‘I just wanted to do the whole story justice,’ he told Metro of the showdown with Ste, revealing that he thought long and hard about the best way to deliver the emotional impact of the scene in the days leading up to the shoot.
‘With the whole Ste, Dillon Lucas thing, we had to pull it out of the bag. I really had to dig deep for it but itās those kind of scenes that as an actor you really want.’
And do it justice he most certainly did, delivering a powerhouse performance that is undoubtedly his best work to date, with fans subsequently flocking to social media to heap praise on his stellar work.
On the overwhelmingly positive reaction, Oscar said warmly: ‘Seeing the fans so happy with the scene, that isĀ the most rewarding thing as an actor.’
The hostage situation concluded with Lucas being arrested. The focus will now shift to his future as he weighs up how to plead and Oscar confirmed that his character will ‘want to change his environment’ fast.
Former flame Dillon, who visited Lucas behind bars last week, is adamant that accepting responsibility and pleading guilty is the right way forward.
‘He tends to always do what Dillon wants,’ noted Oscar. ‘Lucas is a bit of a lover boy really and anything Dillon says heāll pretty much do!’

But while the prospect of making Dillon proud might have initially at the fore of Lucas’ mind, the situation was turned on its head when he learned that James Nightingale (Gregory Finnegan) was alive and well.
And before he even got the chance to process his stepdad’s return from beyond the grave, James urged him to plead not guilty.
‘Itās pretty mad!,’ said Oscar of James’ role in his story. ‘Itās his stepdad who he didnāt have a great relationship with, who he thinks died in a car explosion, and before he knows it he could be his saving grace in prison! Itās like: āWhat the hell?!ā
‘Thereās lots of mixed emotions there but overall for Lucas, heās intrigued. This man who he thought was dead is alive and for some reason he wants to help him, so there will be a lot of questions ā and alarm bells ā going around in his head, I reckon.’
Teasing what’s to come, the star added: ‘I donāt think Lucas will want to stay where he is. Heās put in certain situations by different characters and heās got this internal battle of ādo I do the right thing and serve out my sentence?ā or ādo I go down this other route which has been presented to me?ā.
While viewers will have to wait and see the outcome of Lucas’ dilemma, it’s safe to say that they’re keen to know if a reunion with Dillon is off the cards following the affair. Is it really over for HayRay?
Given all that has unfolded over the past six months or so, you would think there could be no possible rekindling of romance. But then again, the ice was seemingly thawing between the two during Dillon’s prison visit. Could there actually be a way back?
‘I mean, itās Hollyoaks!,’ said Oscar when I put the question to him. ‘Thereās always a way back somehow. Dillon and Lucas have such a strong connection, itās almost flammable at times!’.
And as for Lucas and Ste? Can they ever recover? In terms of the family dynamic being mended, Oscar doesn’t see it happening in the immediate future – but amid all of that conflict remains heaps of potential for great scenes.
‘I think there could be such an amazing future storyline there,’ he pondered. ‘It is unacceptable to sleep with your sonās soulmate, I think that’s the only way to put it. That is categorically wrong and I think there has to be an element of that. So I think it would be interesting to see how the two characters interact post all of this.’
In three years (four in-universe following the time jump), Lucas has been at the centre of many storylines, and – despite how bleak things may look for him at the minute – there’s still plenty of drama left to unfold.
And much like the fans, Oscar is keen to see further exploration of Lucas’ state of mind.
‘I think it would be important to understand why Lucas is acting the way heās acting,’ he said. ‘Because on the surface it seems like heās acting out and that heās crazy but if you take back some of the layers⦠his actions arenāt just but they do make sense.
‘I think it would be really good if Hollyoaks had a storyline where we see the internal workings of Lucasā mind and see how it functions ā the reason why he acts like this, why he lovebombs and gets attached to characters and puts everything on them.’
Hollyoaks streams Mondays to Wednesdays from 6am on Channel 4ās streaming platform, or catch episodes on TV at 7pm on E4.
