The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Olufemi Oluyede, has reiterated the Armed Forces’ resolve to continue supporting peace-building and stabilisation initiatives in Benue State and across Nigeria.

General Oluyede gave the assurance while hosting the Governor of Benue State, Reverend Father Hyacinth Alia, who paid him a courtesy visit at the Defence Headquarters in Abuja.

According to a statement issued by the Director of Defence Information, Major General Samaila Uba, Governor Alia congratulated the CDS on his appointment and praised the Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN) for their sustained operations aimed at improving security in Benue.

The governor observed that the military’s visible presence and commitment have boosted public confidence and rekindled hope for lasting peace, leading to noticeable improvements in the state’s security situation.

Alia also reaffirmed the state government’s willingness to continue collaborating with the Defence Headquarters to address security challenges and strengthen peace in troubled communities.

He requested additional support for Benue’s ongoing programme encouraging non-state actors to surrender their weapons.

In particular, the governor highlighted security concerns in the Sankera axis, covering Katsina-Ala, Zaki Biam and Logo local government areas.

Responding, General Oluyede expressed satisfaction with the gradual security gains recorded in several parts of Benue State, attributing the progress to improved cooperation among security agencies, traditional institutions, community leaders and the state government.

He noted that the improving peace situation shows the fact that lasting stability is achievable when all stakeholders work in harmony with security forces. According to him, sustained collaboration and mutual trust can help restore full normalcy in all affected parts of the state and the country at large.

The CDS disclosed plans to introduce a formal engagement framework between the AFN and the Benue State Government to enhance coordination with local actors and consolidate existing security achievements.

He further stressed the need for non-kinetic strategies, including rehabilitation and livelihood support for affected persons and those who have been reintegrated into society.

Oluyede commended Benue State’s initiative in this regard and urged the government to put durable support systems in place to discourage any return to criminal activities.

He assured that the Armed Forces would continue to support programmes focused on enduring peace, reconciliation and socio-economic recovery in Benue State.
