The Department of Home Affairs has confirmed it will relocate its Centurion offices to Centurion Mall, citing growing concerns about public safety and unsuitable working conditions at the current site. The department will close the existing offices on Friday, while the new office is scheduled to open to the public next Monday.

The department says the move aims to protect both clients and staff and to improve the quality of services offered. The current Centurion offices have faced persistent challenges, particularly around security and infrastructure, which the department says no longer meet acceptable standards for a public service facility.

Home Affairs: Safety risks drive the decision

Home Affairs said the absence of secure on-site parking forced many clients to park on surrounding streets, leaving them exposed to criminals. The department acknowledged that these conditions placed unnecessary risk on members of the public seeking essential services.

By relocating to Centurion Mall, the department expects to benefit from controlled access, improved security systems, and safer parking.

The department also raised concerns about the illegal selling of queue positions by some individuals outside the current offices. This practice has disadvantaged legitimate clients and undermined fair access to services.

Services during the transition period

Although the existing office will close on Friday, Home Affairs said it has implemented temporary measures to ensure limited services continue during the transition. Mobile units will be stationed at the current Centurion site to assist clients.

These mobile units will handle Smart ID Card applications and collections only. Clients requiring other services, such as passport applications or civil registrations, have been advised to wait until the Centurion Mall office opens or to visit alternative Home Affairs branches.

The department said it will issue further communication to guide the public once operations fully resume at the new location.

A move toward dignity and improved service

Home Affairs Minister Leon Schreiber said officials in Gauteng are prioritising continuity during the relocation. “Our teams in Gauteng are working hard to ensure minimal disruption during this move,” Schreiber said.

He described the relocation as part of a broader effort to improve the department’s service environment. “We are transitioning from an outdated and unsuitable facility to a modern, well-equipped environment that allows Home Affairs to serve people with dignity,” he added.
